No mundo greco-romano o casamento era monogâmico e para a vida toda, mas raramente ocorria. A mortalidade das mulheres era alta em virtude do casamento e gravidez precoces. A poligamia era rara, mas os homens podiam ter concubinas, sem que isso fosse considerado adultério. Era importante casar e ter filhos, mas havia correntes filosóficas que estimulavam o celibato como algo superior. Divorciar-se era muito fácil e o novo casamento era pressuposto. No mundo judaico o casamento era instituído por Deus. Casar-se cedo era importante para lidar com as tentações sexuais. A procriação era uma tarefa sagrada para a continuidade do povo de Deus. O divórcio normalmente ocorria por iniciativa do marido. Em Romanos 7, Paulo afirma que a fidelidade ao cônjuge acaba quando ele falece. É uma ilustração a respeito da morte para a Lei. Em 1Timóteo 3/Tito 1 uma das qualificações para o presbítero é “marido de uma só mulher”. O texto é ambíguo e dá margem a várias interpretações. Possivelmente significa uma vida conjugal exemplar.
